Smoker Modifications

Building a Smoker-Grill Page 2
Okay
we made fire now I want to separate the grill portion from the smoker portion
so the fat doesn’t clog up the orifices in the burner. To do that I bought two huge commercial sized
cookie sheets, cut them to fit and riveted them together.
Here
are today’s additional tools:
First
I had to cut the two trays to fit together overlapping by about an inch. The
edges of the trays have a thick steel rod to make them more stable. For this a
used my el cheapo grinder with a metal cutting blade. I was going to use the
tin snips to finish cutting the aluminum tray but this was just soooooo much
easier. I just flipped the tray and finished the cut all the way across the
tray.
Next
I cut a little tab out of the overlapping edge, removed the small piece of
steel rod and crimped the top edge over the bottom edge using slip joint
pliers.
The
joint between the two trays was pretty good but I wanted it a little bit
tighter so I added one more tool – the pop rivet gun and drilled 5 tiny holes
and riveted the sections together.
It’s
surely not water proof but I’ll put heavy duty tin foil on it to make cleanup
easier and that should do protect the burner from getting clogged – I
hope. Coming soon ….
